Choose a target that fits your situation
A cash buffer can help with a disrupted paycheck or an unexpected expense. This calculator turns the number of months you choose into a dollar target. It does not choose an appropriate emergency fund for you or recommend an investment.
- Total essential expenses such as housing, groceries, utilities, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments.
- Choose the amount of time you want your buffer to cover.
- Enter cash reserved for emergencies and a realistic monthly contribution.
The math
Target = essential monthly expenses × chosen months. Gap = target minus reserved cash, with a minimum of zero. Time to target = gap divided by the monthly contribution, rounded up to a whole month. The timeline assumes month-end contributions, no interest and no withdrawals.
For example, $2,500 of essentials and a three-month target produce a $7,500 goal. With $1,500 saved and $300 added each month, the $6,000 gap takes 20 months. A $0 contribution leaves the goal unfunded indefinitely unless it is already reached.
Keep known bills separate
An annual insurance renewal is predictable, so fund it separately. Counting the same cash toward both a renewal and an emergency target overstates your protection. Review essential spending after major changes such as a move or a new dependent.
